Prof. Derek Chiu Sung-Kee is a veteran filmmaker from Hong Kong. As of 2018, he has directed 18 feature films, including his latest film No.1 Chung Ying Street which won the Grand Prix at the Osaka Asian Film Festival in March, 2018.

Prof. Chiu started his career in TV and directed over 30 TV drama series and telemovies in the 1980s and 1990s. He studied Foreign Languages and Literatures at the National Taiwan University. He was an associate professor at the School of Creative Media in the City University of Hong Kong previously.

More recently, Prof. Chiu served as producer on Mad World (2016). The acclaimed film won multiple awards, including best new director for Wong Chun at both the Golden Horse Awards and the Hong Kong Film Awards.

No.1 Chung Ying Street (2018)

No.1 Chung Ying Street, the 18th feature film of Prof. Derek Chiu, received its world premiere at the Osaka Asian Film Festival in March 2018 and went on to win the grand prix, beating 14 other films in competition.

Describing the film as “definitely an important film for our generation”, the Osaka jury said that “what impressed us is how personally it affected us and provoked our emotions deeply, and we feel emotionally connected to the young people in this powerful and brave movie”.

In November 2018, the film won a second award – best feature film at the South Taiwan Film Festival in Tainan. It was also nominated for the Human Rights Award.

As of May 2019, the film was screened in 14 film festivals worldwide from Vancouver to Vienna (please see the full list below). More festivals have been lined up for 2019.

The film has received excellent reviews from international trade press, including Screen International and Hollywood Reporter.

At home in Hong Kong, the film was released theatrically on May 31. Its sensitive subject matters have attracted enormous media attention, including the BBC.
