背景

The Academy of Film has established the Final Year Project Awards for postgraduate, undergraduate and sub-degree programmes, which include Master of Fine Arts in Film, Television and Digital Media, BCOMM (Hon) in Communication - Film Major - Film and Television Concentration and Higher Diploma in Creative Film Production, with effect from 2014-15 academic year.

The Awards will be given annually to recognize and reward students with outstanding performance in their final year projects, including film, media arts, script, thesis and performance. The Awards also aim to incentivize students to strive for excellence. In case of any dispute/disagreement, the decision of the Academy of Film shall be final. The Awards categories include:

Young Film Talent Awards

The Young Film Talent Awards are designed for both undergraduate programme and higher diploma programme.

A. Young Film Talent Awards for Undergraduate Programme

Target Programmes

  • Production track of BCOMM (Hon) in Communication - Film Major (Film and Television Concentration)
  • ​Production track of BA (Hon) in Film - Film and Television

 

Assessment Method

  • The winners will be selected by assessors;
  • Only film projects with grade A- or above are qualified for the nomination;
  • Priority in the selection of Gold Prize must be given to projects with grade A or above;
  • In the cases that there are no qualified projects for the year, no award would be given.

 

Prize
Gold Prize (1 prize)

Individual Project $10,000 and a trophy or a certificate
Group Project $12,000 and a trophy or a certificate

Silver Prize (1 prize)

Individual Project $8,000 and a trophy or a certificate
Group Project $9,000 and a trophy or a certificate

B. Young Film Talent Awards for Higher Diploma Programme

Target Programmes

  • All Specializations of Higher Diploma in Creative Film Production
     

Assessment Method

  • Individual Prize: The winners will be selected by external assessors;
  • Group Prize: The winners will be selected by external assessors based on the course rubric
  • Only final works with grade A- or above are qualified for the nomination;
  • Priority in the selection of Gold Prize must be given to final works with grade A or above;
  • In the cases that there are no qualified projects for the year, no award would be given.

Gold Prize (1 prize) $15,000 and a trophy or a certificate
Silver Prize (1 prize) $10,000 and trophy or a certificate

Individual Prize

Gold Prize (1 prize) $7,000 and trophy or a certificate

Young Media Artist Awards

Target Programmes

  • BSocSc (Hon) in Communication - Film and Media Arts Major (Media Arts Concentration)
  • BSocSc (Hon) in Communication - Film Major (Animation and Media Arts Concentration)


Assessment Method

  • Internal Assessor Committee will nominate 3 final projects to 3 external panel members for their assessment
  • Only film projects with grade A- or above are qualified for the nomination;
  • The selection of the winners is based on course rubrics and following weightings
Weighting of Internal Assessment Committee’s assessment 60%
Weighting of External Panel’s assessment 40%
  • Priority in the selection of Gold Prize must be given to projects with grade A or above;
  • In the cases that there are no qualified projects for the year, no award would be given.

Young Writer Awards

The Young Writer Awards are designed for higher diploma programme.
* Since Dr. Ng Ho Script Writing Scholarship is also eligible for undergraduate students of BSocSc (Hon) in Communication - Film and Media Arts Major / BSocSc (Hon) in Communication - Film Major selecting Script Writing track as their honors project, there will not be another final year project awards set up for the said track.
 

A. Young Writer Awards for Higher Diploma Programme

Target Programmes

  • Script Writing Specialization of Higher Diploma in Creative Film Production
     

Assessment Method

  • The winners will be selected by external accessors based on the course rubric;
  • Only final works with grade A- or above are qualified for the nomination;
  • Priority in the selection of Gold Prize must be given to final works with grade A or above;
  • In the cases that there are no qualified projects for the year, no award would be given;
  • The awardees of Young Writer Awards will not be nominated for Dr. Ng Ho Script Writing Scholarship.

Young Performer Awards

Target Programmes

  • Acting Techniques Specialization of Higher Diploma in Creative Film Production
     

Assessment Method

  • The winners will be selected by external assessors based on the course rubric;
  • Only final works with grade A- or above are qualified for the nomination;
  • Priority in the selection of Gold Prize must be given to final works with grade A or above;
  • In the cases that there are no qualified projects for the year, no award would be given.

Outstanding Thesis Award

Target Programmes

  • Thesis track of BSocSc (Hon) in Communication - Film and Media Arts Major (Film Concentration)

Assessment Method

  • The supervisor will nominate thesis works with extraordinary scholarly merit for the award to two other assessors (one assessor must be from department outside Academy of Film) for selection and endorsement based on the course rubrics;
  • Only thesis work with extraordinary scholarly merit, and grade A or above is qualified for the nomination;
  • In the cases that there are no qualified projects for the year, no award would be given.
     

Prize

MFA Thesis Project Awards

Target Programmes

  • Master of Fine Arts in Film, Television and Digital Media
     

Assessment Method

  • Prize will be given to the best Thesis Projects (four for projects delivered as film productions; four for projects delivered as scripts; one for projects delivered as a work of digital media; one for projects delivered as documentary films).
  • Selection is based on the consensus of the external assessors in Final Thesis Assessment and the thesis supervisor of that particular category.
  • Only Projects with grade B+ or above are eligible for the nomination of prizes.
  • Gold Prizes must be given to Projects with grade A- or above.
  • Projects attaining the minimum grade requirements do not necessarily warrant an award.

 

Remarks

  1. MFA Programme may modify the number of prizes or the award amount within the budgeted total when deemed necessary, e.g. when there are more students with identical scores that qualify for an award than the number of awards offered.
  2. The Programme may not offer all or part of the prizes in case there are no sufficient qualified works or when the Programme runs into unpredictable financial circumstances.
